Meet David Merry, A Triality's Screenwriter from Canada

Where do you write?

I use Final Draft to write my screenplays, television shows and short films. It is kept in the cloud so when I travel I have the latest version if I am at home writing on my desktop here in Toronto or at our condo in Naples Florida.

Which writers are you most inspired by?

I really like Aaron Sorkin’s writing as well as Billy Wilder from years gone by and Quentin Tarantino’s early stuff.

What’s your proudest moment as a writer?

I think the proudest moment as a writer was the day I finished my first screenplay. Many people start out to write one very few finish. I have just completed my ninth!

What are you working on at the moment?

I am just finishing off a Hallmark movie. It is a total departure for me but there is a huge appetite for these and I love trying new genres. As a comedian I am basically a story teller. Screenwriting is just a natural progression of my story telling journey.

What are your favourite television shows?

The Brits make the best television on the planet. In my opinion, the finest television show ever filmed is Sherlock. The best cop show was Luther. On this side of the pond Breaking Bad is the finest every made over here.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

I still tour as a professional comedian but my passion is golf. I turned pro in 1997 and played in a few events on the Canadian Tour, now I just play with family and friends. Coming to Ireland for a golf trip and to shoot a travel show in August!

What sort of characters interest you?

I like characters who are quirky, unpredictable and have a little of all of us in them Good characters should be rooted in reality for people to relate to.

What’s your favourite place in the world?

My favorite place in the world was Santorini Greece, until last summer. Now it’s Hallstatt Austria google it!

Where can we see your work?

I am directing my first feature film this coming year and have a new TV show coming out in April called Off the Hozzle, a comedy golf travel show which will be able to be seen around the world on Amazon soon.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a writer?

I would still be doing one of my other loves in the world, comedy, golf or sleight of hand magic.
