Meet Jessica Van Campen, A Triality Screenwriter from the USA

Where do you write?

I prefer to write at home, or in someone else’s when I am pet sitting. I can never get into writing in a café, especially on a laptop. I prefer to write in a notebook when out and about.

Which writers are you most inspired by?

Some of my favorite writers are Annie Proulx, Kate Atkinson, David Sedaris.

What’s your proudest moment as a writer?

Anytime I do not cringe when re-reading a draft it is a proud moment.

What are you working on at the moment?

I am working on a television docu-comedy series and a collection of autobiographical essays about my mother.

What made you want to write in the first place?

Since a childhood I’ve marveled at the craft of a well told story.

What are your favourite films/tv series?

Series - Six Feet Under / High Maintenance. Film - Singin’ in the Rain

What do you do when you’re not writing?

When I am not writing I am doing yoga, going on urban hikes, reading - more often than not these activities are interrupted with thoughts about a writing project.

What sort of characters interest you?

I gravitate toward characters who are determined and forthright, but honest about not having a clue of what they are doing. And those who are beaten down by some aspect of life, but still somehow manage to make everything hilarious.

Where’s your favourite place in the world?

Generally, anywhere I go if I can find a path up a hill or into the mountains, I am happy.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a writer?

This is an extremely difficult question as I still don’t consider myself solely a writer…If I had my druthers, I would like to collaborate more on writing and film projects.
